Baku Telephone Communications Production Association, operating under the Transport, Communication and High Technologies Ministry, is finishing work on the launch of free Wi-Fi in several public places of the capital city.

The PA told Trend on March 10 that specialists have completed the installation of Wi-Fi access points at the Baku Boulevard and the State Flag Square.

Moreover, the work has been completed on the installation of equipment in Icherisheher (Old City). The next step will be the extension of the coverage of the wireless free Internet in the area adjacent to the Heydar Aliyev Center.

The main objective of the Public Wi-Fi project is to provide access to the Internet in places of a mass congestion of people for residents and guests of Baku.

Azerbaijan ranks first among the countries of Post-Soviet region for the level of broadband internet penetration. Thus, Azerbaijan left behind Russia (where the level of penetration is 18.8 percent), Georgia (14.6 percent), Kazakhstan (13 percent) and other CIS countries.

Moreover, Azerbaijan is the 58th country in the world over number of its Internet users. Statistical project Internet Live Stats noted that the number of Azerbaijani Internet users has exceeded 6 million, accounting for 61.1 percent of the country’s population.

The signal of the digital broadcasting covers approximately 99 percent of Azerbaijan, while over 75 percent of the country’s population have an access to the Internet.
