A ceremony to launch the Barda ferry, built for the Azerbaijan State Caspian Sea Shipping Company was held at the Croatian Uljanik shipyard on Thursday, May 10, the company's spokesman Vugar Sadikhov told Trend on Thursday.

The ceremony was attended by a shipping company delegation headed by Aydin Bashirov, as well as Azerbaijan's ambassador to Croatia, Kamil Khasiyev.

"Almost three decades ago in 1984-86, shipbuilders at Uljanik built and put into operation eight ferries for Caspian sailors. At the behest of national leader Heydar Aliyev, who at that time was first deputy prime minister of the USSR, all these ferries were made available to the Caspian Sea Shipping Company. These ships are still successfully working in the Europe-Caucasus-Asia transport corridor. They deliver a variety of goods from Baku to Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan and back," Bashirov said at the ceremony.

The company's head said that President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev successfully continues the policy of Heydar Aliyev.

"The president is constantly interested in the problems of marine transportation of the country, helping sailors in the process of fleet renewal and the order of new ferries in Croatia is to the credit of the president of Azerbaijan," Bashirov said.

A second ferry, Balaken, built for the Caspian Sea Shipping Company, will be launched next month. Both ferries will arrive in the country by the end of the year.

The cost of building one vessel will be 22 million euros. Funding is provided from the republic's state budget. Vessels will have a new and improved design. In addition, these ferries have the ability to receive cars will be increased to 54 units.

In May 2011 a contract was signed between Azerbaijani and Croatian partners to build ferries under the 2+3 scheme. The right to order three more ferries Caspian Shipping Company reserves for itself.
