The prime minister of Spain on Monday offered his Moroccan counterpart a joint bid alongside Portugal to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, according to Spanish sources, EFE Agency reported.

Pedro Sanchez proposed the idea in a meeting with his counterpart Saad Eddine El Othmani during his first visit to Morocco, in which he is also to meet with King Mohammed VI.

Sanchez did not mention the proposal during a joint press conference that followed the meeting.

Morocco unsuccessfully sought to host the 2026 World Cup, losing out to a joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay had announced they would present a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, which will mark the 100th anniversary of the tournament first held in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo.
