Baku 2015 welcomes Serbia's sport minister

Baku 2015 European Games has welcomed Serbia's Youth and Sports Minister Vanja Udovicic to the organization's headquarters.

Before moving into politics, Udovicic was one of Serbia's most talented Water Polo players and won three Olympic medals - silver at Athens 2004 and bronze at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Udovicic, who was visiting Azerbaijan for the Global Forum on Youth Policies, was updated on all of the latest progress and developments being made before next year's inaugural European Games.

Chief Operating Officer of Baku 2015 Simon Clegg said: "It was a pleasure to welcome Udovicic to the Baku 2015 headquarters."

Serbia will be sending a strong team to the inaugural European Games, and we are looking forward to welcoming their athletes to the competition here next year, he stressed.

To date, with 50 percent of the sports qualification process complete, Serbia have qualified athletes to compete in Basketball 3x3, Boxing, Canoe Sprint, Gymnastics and Wrestling.

In his turn, Udovicic said: "I was very pleased to be able to visit the Baku 2015 offices and some of the competition venues and facilities. This was also an excellent opportunity for me to meet some of the Serbian members of the Baku 2015 team that are helping to make the European Games come alive next year."

"In Serbia, our athletes are aware that the European Games as an important event that will become one of the major multi-sport events on the international calendar, so they are very excited about the opportunity to represent our country here in Baku," he added.

Overall, the first European games will gather more than 6,000 athletes to compete over the 17 days of competition.
