Azerbaijan’s leading companies back Baku's 2020 Olympics bid

Leading Azerbaijani companies have officially supported the candidacy of Baku to host the Olympics in 2020.

The leaders of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) and the largest mobile operator, Azercell, supported the Baku 2020 project, the Ministry of Youth and Sports told Trend on Friday.

Executive Director of the Organising Committee of the Baku 2020 Konul Nurullayeva, expressing satisfaction that the influential companies of Azerbaijan supported the candidacy of Baku to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 in Baku, said that the results of a survey conducted earlier showed that 95 percent of the Azerbaijani population supported the Baku 2020.

"Recently in the capital and the regions of Azerbaijan 500,000 signatures have been collected in support of the Baku 2020. Baku-2020 is also fully supported by the Azerbaijani government and political parties. Now our Olympic dreams are supported by the largest Azerbaijani companies. We are very excited about this and hope that Olympic Games 2020 will be held in Baku," Nurullayeva said.

Baku, Istanbul, Doha, Madrid and Tokyo compete for the right to host the Olympic Games in 2020. The executive committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will name the cities that will receive the status of candidates in Canada, Quebec, on May 23, 2012.
