Azeri athletes get over 30 licences for London Olympics

Azerbaijani athletes have gained more than 30 licences for the London Olympics so far, Youth and Sport Minister Azad Rahimov has said. “We are also hopeful that 20 more licences will be gained. We're expecting over 50 places for Azerbaijani sportsmen in the summer Olympics in London," the minister said.

He said he was encouraged by the positive reaction of the International Olympic Committee to Azerbaijan’s bid to host the summer games in 2020.

“In his recent speech the president of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, praised the candidate cities for the 2020 Olympics, describing Madrid, Tokyo, Istanbul, Doha and Baku as very serious candidates. If we are among them, it means we are on the right lines. We have broad capacities and confidence. They believe that we are able to organize a successful 2020 Olympics," Rahimov said.
