The Azerbaijani National Olympic Committee announced a plan of sports facilities and structures to be built, if Baku approved to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
National Olympic Committee Vice President Chingiz Huseynzade told Trend that the ‘Bid Book’ presented by Azerbaijan to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne provides information about existing and planned sports facilities and infrastructure, their location and capacity.
"These facilities will be constructed if Baku elected as the venue for the 2020 Olympic Games,” Huseynzade said. He also spoke about the plans to construct the Olympic Village. It’s planned to construct the Olympic Village in the territory, where now the Azerneftyag oil refinery is located.
"Irrespective of whether the Olympic Games will be held in Baku or elsewhere, the Azerneftyag oil refinery will be moved to other area. However, construction of the Olympic Village in its place will be launched if Baku approved to host the 2020 Olympic Games,” he stressed. Huseynzade noted that the area of 150 hectares, which is now occupied by the refinery, would be sufficient for the Olympic Village, where sport facilities, restaurants, recreation centers, clinics and other facilities are necessary.
As for the central arena for 60,000 seats, which will be the venue for the main Olympic competition, as well as the opening and closing ceremony, it will be built in the Boyukshor village.
The IOC approved Baku’s nomination to host the 2020 Olympic Games. The national organizing committee was established in Azerbaijan in this regard.
Madrid, Tokyo, Istanbul, as well as Qatar's capital Doha have also been nominated for hosting the Summer Olympics-2020. Their first presentation must be held in February 2012.
