Suicides have become common among elderly people in Azerbaijan lately, expert Vamiq Shukurov said.
"Normally, we have the facts of suicide among middle-aged people or adolescents. But in recent years we have observed a trend of increasing suicide cases among older lonely people aged 75-85 years."
Basically, these people decide to commit suicide as they find it difficult to adapt to the situation in society, the expert believes.
Some of the lonely elderly people become victims of fraud, Shukurov said.
Not once, we have witnessed cases when elderly people ended up in a street as they were fraudulently deprived of a home, the expert noted. Today, 284,533 elderly pensioners aged 70-80 years, 77,079 pensioners aged 80-90 years and 9,401 pensioners aged over 90 years have been registered in Azerbaijan.
As of July 1, the number of pensioners in Azerbaijan was 1,291,139 people.
