02 September 2010 [13:25] - TODAY.AZ
The well-known U.S. online newspaper, The Huffington Post, chose not to include Azerbaijan in the list of the world's most polluted places this week.
According to their research, the world's most polluted places are: the Sitarum River (Indonesia), Chernobyl (Ukraine), Linfen (China), Rondonia (Brazil), the Yamuna River (India), Oroya (Peru), the Karachay River (Russia), Haiti, Kabwe (Zambia), Appalachians (mountains in North America), eastern Virginia (United States), Dzerzhinsk (Russia), the Riachuelo River (Argentina), and Vapi (India).

The Blacksmith Institute included the Azerbaijani city of Sumgayit in a list of the 10 most polluted cities in the world in 2007, and the NYC international rating company listed Baku as the most polluted city on the planet.

Environmental protection activities have gained serious momentum in recent years in Azerbaijan, and international organizations have also become more objective in their reports, Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry spokesperson Irada Ibrahimova said.

"The ministry will continue to implement major projects to clean contaminated areas," Ibrahimova said.
