'Explosion is technically impossible in Azerbaijani sector of Caspian Sea'

A catastrophic explosion that caused an oil spill from a BP offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico is impossible technically in Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea since SOCAR has perfect technical resources and well-trained personnel, SOCAR Vice-President for Environment Soltan Aliyev said at a meeting dealing with Caspian environmental risks attended by representatives of the Caspian-European Integration Business Club, various companies and societies.

SOCAR Vice-President Soltan Aliyev told of the progress achieved and future plans to prevent such accidents in the Caspian. Deputy Chairman of Milli Majlis Valeh Alasgarov provided information about projects to be implemented during the Year of Ecology designated by President Ilham Aliyev in 2010.

He noted the government of Azerbaijan is very sensitive towards environmental problems and implements important projects. Alasgarov underlined the government pays special attention to environmental education, monitoring of the Caspian, conservation of biodiversity.
