Azerbaijani Facebook users are being recruited by secret services?

20 April 2010 [11:03] - TODAY.AZ
Social networks websites Facebook and Twitter are used by secret services to recruit agents. According to international media, this is claimed by one of the world terrorist organizations.

Is such thing possible in Azerbaijan? Can foreign intelligence services involve Azerbaijani citizens into secret cooperation through social networks? How this issue is handled in Azerbaijan?

"In general, Internet is one of the most important weapons, as each state or a hostile country is trying to use this tool. People use internet with different names and we never know what purpose they pursue,” member of the Azerbaijani parliament’s Security and Defense Committee Zahid Oruj said.

“It is possible that secret agents sit in social networks trying to attract people to cooperation. In my opinion, one can not exclude that intelligence services of various countries can also involve Azerbaijani nationals to secret cooperation through social networks. Therefore, I would like our country to adopt a law "On information security”. As far as I know, appropriate agencies oversee this issue. This question is at the center of their attention."

Azerbaijani citizens should be more careful when dealing with strangers on forums and social networks, the MP added.

"We must not allow hostile forces us to use different Internet services against us. But we need to adopt a law "On information security” to fully address this issue. In this matter, the danger comes not only from Armenian nationalists, but also other forces,” the MP noted.
