Noah's Mausoleum to be restored in Nakhichevan

03 July 2006 [19:18] - TODAY.AZ
Chairman of the Supreme Mejlis of the Nakhichevan autonomous republic of Azerbaijan Vasif Talibov signed a decree 'On the restoration of prophet Noah’s mausoleum in Nakhichevan.'

The document reads that Nakhichevan is an oldest city of the world. It is over 3,500-4,000 years, according to various analyzed sources, Interfax reports.

Data on the name of the city are also available. The Turkic tribes of nakhch were once considered as having given the name to it. Other sources connect Nakhichevan with the prophet Noah himself, as his name sounds as nukh in Turkic.

As Sumerian legend widespread among the inhabitants of Nakhichevan since old times holds it, the Noah's Ark landed at Nakhichevan after the Flood some 7,500 years ago. The prophet and those with him settled here, thus engendering a new generation of people.

'There is no other territory on the earth so rich with place-names connected with Noah as Nakhichevan. According to popular belief, Noah is buried in southern part of Nakhichevan, and his sister is buried in the northwest of the city,' the document reads.
