EU-funded anti-drug program to be mulled in Baku

The implementation of the European Union-funded South Caucasus Anti-Drug (SCAD) program will be discussed at a three-day meeting of experts from the Ministries of Health and Justice, and the State Statistics Committee, due in Baku Thursday, the SCAD office said.

An EU expert Thomas Zabransky is due to attend the discussions focusing on the estimates provided by a European monitoring center. He is expected to issue his recommendations on ways of efficiently countering the proliferation of drugs.

According to AssA-Irada, the participants will touch upon the fatalities caused by drugs, infectious diseases contracted through the injection of narcotics and other related issues.

The SCAD Program, signed on June 29, 2001 by the EU, UNDP and the Azerbaijani government, has been operating in the country for over 3 years. The program envisions legal assistance, control over drugs in airports and seaports, supervising borderline areas, as well as police-search system and setting up an NGO network.
