As weather forecasts warned about continuation of high temperatures in the country, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Labor and Social Protection informed the companies and agencies about the appropriate working conditions which should be observed in hot summer days.

The abnormal heat and weak wind forecasted till July 23 in Baku and Absheron peninsula. The weather will be unfavorable for weather-sensitive people.

The State Labor Inspectorate under the Ministry has applied directly to employers encouraging them to stop their work in the open air, if the temperature rises above 41 degrees Celsius.

Under the labor code, work under the open sun with temperatures reaching 41 degrees is strictly prohibited.  All operations should stop in open areas, as well as in indoor workplaces that do not have air conditioning during the hot summer days.

Employees should have breaks to cool down. The number and duration of breaks is defined on the basis of joint decision of employer and trade-union organization. The breaks are included in the actual working hour and paid.

Working in extreme heat puts stress on a person’s cooling system. When heat is combined with other stresses such as hard physical work, loss of fluids, fatigue or some medical conditions, it may lead to heat-related illness

Even mild heat-related illness results in muscle cramps, fatigue and sweating, while the moderate form can cause headaches, vomiting, nausea and fatigue.

In its most severe form, known as heat stroke, a person can slip into a coma and die if not treated quickly and appropriately.

The labor inspectorate and trade unions control outdoor labor, in places such as construction sites and oil fields. If a violation of the law is revealed, the violator faces a fine of around 2,000 manats($1,276).

Medics recommend people be careful and avoid physical labor outdoors during the abnormal heat.
