The Kharaba-Gilan archeological expedition of the Archeology and Ethnography Institute under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences operating in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is currently conducting excavations at the Plovdag monuments complex, Dalma castle, and ruins of Kharaba-Gilan city.

According to expedition head Behlul Ibrahimli, who is also the senior researcher at the Institute, the archeologists discovered seven mounds in the Plovdag’s second necropolis.

During the excavations in the mounds, which date back to the second and millennia BC, the archeologists found pottery dating to the ancient Goktepe settlement near Urmiya.

The ceramics found mostly in Nakhchivan and Urmiya give grounds to say that the history of Ordubad goes back to the Middle Bronze Age.

According to the previous archaeological researches the Kharaba-Gilan settlement arose in the middle of first millennium BC, and the city experienced boom and bust cycles in subsequent centuries. The ancient buildings in the city feature rich architectural decorations.

Ordubad is famous for its mausoleums. The octagonal mausoleum, partly preserved within the Kharaba Gilan is the most interesting one. Research shows that the mausoleum was established in XII century by outstanding Azerbaijani architect Adjemi.

The first archaeological dig on modern Azerbaijani territory was conducted in the 19th-20th centuries.

During the construction of a copper smelting plant by German company "Brothers Siemens" in Azerbaijan’s Gadabay region, workers found an ancient Late Bronze Age burial site. Dozens of graves were excavated, studied, and then taken to Germany for further research.
