Baku hosting int'l conference on heart diseases

The opening ceremony of the international conference on “Innovation in congenital heart diseases” was held in the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku on November 20.

The event, which will run till November 22 is jointly organized by the Azerbaijan’s Heart and Health Association, the Health Ministry and the Heydar Aliyev Center.

About 100 doctors from 47 countries are attending the conference.

Addressing the event, Deputy Director of the Heydar Aliyev Center, Adil Kerimli said the international conference is being conducted as part of larger projects in the field of health by the Heydar Aliyev Center.

“The main goal of the projects is prevention of congenital heart defects, their early diagnosis and treatment in accordance with international standards. It is also aimed to give a boost to the use of quality systems, to create conditions for important achievements in the area of solving problems by specialists’ efforts,” he said.

Kerimli noted that the conference is a sample of humanitarian support by Azerbaijani government and the UN Health Organization to ensure the fundamental rights of the children’s health.

The Deputy Director assured that the conference will contribute to the work of young doctors and scientists, reminding that one hundredth of newborn baby in the world is born with a heart defect.

Noting that Azerbaijan strongly pays attention to children’s health, Kerimli recalled that the Heydar Aliyev Foundation has been conducting a lot of work in the field of treatment of children born with a heart defect.

Deputy Health Minister Elsever Agayev noted that the work on health development is held in Azerbaijan and new health institutions have been built in Azerbaijan.

As he said, the services provided to children in the country are governed by specials programs and added that the Cabinet of Ministers has adopted the law on children compulsory medical examination.

“Only for the first nine months of the year, 2 million out of 2.6 million children in the country took mandatory medical examinations. As a result, five percent of ill children were reported for further examination. In the center of cardiac established in Azerbaijan, 1,200 heart surgeries have been conducted,” Agayev said.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Association and the Heart Health of Azerbaijan Rashad Mahmudov noted that more than one million people are born with congenital heart disease, 100,000 of them die before reaching one year old.

“Some 300,000-350,000 children out of a million ones die for unknown reasons in the countries with low levels of medicine, and economic problems,” Mahmudov stressed.

He added that Azerbaijan has had some achievements in this field. Annually 800-1000 children with a heart defect were born in the country. The country has six surgery centers and advanced equipment for conducting heart surgeries.

Later, a film, devoted to congenital heart problems was screened at the conference.
