The avian flu which broke out recently in Russia no threat Azerbaijan, Veterinary Service Spokesman Yolchu Hanveli said.

Earlier, Russia has reported the first cases of a highly pathogenic bird flu virus in nearly two years in villages in the southern Russia.

Some birds were found infected with the H5N1 serotype of the disease on September 1 in two villages in the Altai Krai region near the border with Kazakhstan.

Hanveli said that Azerbaijan has conducted monitoring for detection of avian flu with regards to seasonal migration of birds.

He said that Azerbaijan does not import poultry from Russia. It imports it from such countries as Turkey, U.S. and Brazil which dereases the risk of disease spread.

"The flu is under the control of the Veterinary Service," the spokesman said.

Earlier, outbreak of the bird flu virus H7 strain was recorded on August 21 in the north Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. About half a million chickens were killed at a poultry farm near Mordano, the province of Ravenna.

Similar measures were taken on a farm near Ferrara, where 128,000 hens were slaughtered. Both farms were owned by the same producer, San Paolo. Veterinary control on the ground was tightened, disinfection was carried out and quarantine was declared within a radius of 10 kilometers around the farms.

The H5N1 virus first infected humans in 1997 during a poultry outbreak in Hong Kong.

Since its widespread re-emergence in 2003 and 2004, it spread from Asia to Europe and Africa and has become entrenched in poultry in some countries, resulting in millions of poultry infections, several hundred human cases, and many human deaths.

The number of countries where the cases of human deaths from the disease were reported were grown from two in 2003 to 10 in 2006.

By the end of 2006, the total number of human cases of avian flu has reached 274, while the number of deaths stood at 167.
