Landslides activate in Azerbaijan

08 October 2014 [15:10] - TODAY.AZ
Landslides zones have became more active in Azerbaijan.
Head of the Group to Study of Exogenous Geological Processes and Geological planning expedition under Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry Sadiq Amiraslanov announced about this on October 8.
He noted, that there are signs showing that the landslide zones in Azerbaijan were expanding in late September-early October, because of the drought in the summer months, and emergence of new cracks in the earth's surface, as well as under the influence of rainfall.
Amiraslanov noted that the activation of the landslide zone is observed mostly along roads. There is a partial activation of landslides on the 17km, 40km and 50 km of Lankaran-Lerik highway.
"Threats created by this trend have been eliminated already. Currently, landslide zones on the territory of the republic are not dangerous," he believes.
Landslides are usually reported in spring and autumn in Azerbaijan.
Earlier in the summer, Institute of Geography warned about extremely strong mudflows that are expected to hit Azerbaijan before autumn.
Prolonged drought has been observed in Azerbaijan this summer, which causes mudflows in the mountainous areas. This has created very favorable conditions for mudslides this year.
The institute reported about the risk of floods on the northeastern slope of the Lesser Caucasus in the valley of Zeyemchay in Gadabay, Shamkir, Tovuz, Geygel regions and in the valleys of Shamkirchay and Kurekchay.
Moreover, the northeastern slope of the Greater Caucasus is also endangered. Mudflow danger exists in the valleys of Gusarchay, Gudyalchay, Velvelechay, Gilgilchay and Atachay.
The weather conditions are currently unsustainable in Azerbaijan. The first snow has already reached its northern regions.
Baku and Absheron are expected to have partly cloudy weather with weak drizzle and rain and southeast wind on October 9. The air temperature will vary from 12 to 20 degrees C.
The regions of Azerbaijan places should expect rain, fog, gusty weather. Air temperature will be 9-20 C. The air temperature in the mountains may vary from 0 to 11 degrees.
