
Adviser at the Regional Office for Central Asia of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Lyubov Azbel and the Office`s Project Manager for Azerbaijan Arzu Guliyeva have today visited the Penitentiary Service in Baku.
They met the Service`s deputy chairman Huseyn Alikhanov, who highlighted the Azerbaijani government`s work to improve detention conditions of prisoners and combat illegal drug trafficking.Adviser at the Regional Office for Central Asia of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Lyubov Azbel and the Office`s Project Manager for Azerbaijan Arzu Guliyeva have today visited the Penitentiary Service in Baku.

He said representatives of international organizations were periodically visiting prisons and pre-trial detention facilities to monitor the detention conditions.
“From this point of view our measures and projects, which are carried out on the basis of recommendations of international organizations, to combat illegal drug haul are of great importance. The Penitentiary Service considers all the recommendations by international bodies, and takes appropriate measures,” Alikhanov noted.
Azbel and Guliyeva highlighted the 2011-2013 second stage of the “Effective Prevention of AIDS Risk Groups within Eastern European and Central Asian Population” Project. Alikhanov said the penitentiary Service supported the Project, and promised to provide assistance in its implementation.
He said representatives of international organizations were periodically visiting prisons and pre-trial detention facilities to monitor the detention conditions.
