Georgia to start negotiations on agreement with EU

02 December 2011 [12:47] - TODAY.AZ
Negotiations on a comprehensive free trade and visa-free regime agreement with the EU will begin soon. Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze made this statement following the 12th meeting of Georgia-EU Cooperation Council on Dec.1.

The Georgian delegation on the negotiations was headed by Vashadze, a delegation of the European Union - by Radoslaw Sikorski, Polish Foreign Minister, who presides over the EU.
The Council meeting was also attended by European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle.

"We discussed reforms in the economy, ways to improve the justice system, as well as political dialogue," Vashadze said. In turn, Sikorski said that Georgia has achieved "remarkable progress" in terms of modernization and reform. He said new and effective state institutions have been created.

"The EU will continue to support these changes," he said. Füle also stressed the progress made by Georgia over the last year in its relations with the EU. And this, he said, strengthened the EU's confidence in Georgia. "Negotiations on free trade and visa-free regime will begin very soon," Füle said.
