Turkey's Erdogan, Davutoglu in Foreign Affairs top 100 thinkers

30 November 2011 [13:23] - TODAY.AZ
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu were included in a U.S. magazine’s 2011 list of top 100 global thinkers.

Erdogan and Davutoglu were positioned 16th in the list of Foreign Policy magazine’s top 100 global thinkers of the year. The pair overtook French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron with their ranking.

The bi-monthly American publication wrote that over the past eight years, the team of Erdogan and the foreign minister and academic-turned-diplomat Davutoglu had worked relentlessly to build Turkey into a regional powerhouse.

“This year, with the crises of the Arab Spring, their vision came to pass as Turkey achieved a level of influence in the Middle East it has not had since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.” Turkey is “arguably one of the few unambiguous winners in the region’s upheaval so far,” the magazine said. The top nine names in the list are people involved in the Arab Spring.
