New submarines to join Iran naval fleet

09 June 2011 [15:40] - TODAY.AZ
The Islamic Republic of Iran is set to equip its naval fleet with new domestically-manufactured submarines, Iranian Navy Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Seyyed Mahmoud Mousavi said, Press TV reported with reference to IRNA.

"The new submarines, built by the committed Iranian experts, will join the naval combat fleet," after being tested during upcoming military exercises, Mousavi told.

The drills will test the capabilities and efficiencies of the new submarines, he further explained.

Rear Admiral Mousavi went on to say that the country's naval force seeks to diversify the maneuvers in order to enhance its defense potential.

To achieve this aim, Iran's Navy is ready to hold joint drills with neighboring countries, he pointed out.

In the latest round of the Islamic Republic's joint naval drills, Iran and Oman held a joint naval relief and rescue drill in the north of Omani Sultan Qaboos Port in February.

The naval drill was aimed at enhancing readiness for providing relief services, rescue operations, and the level of regional cooperation.

Since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, the country has embarked on a campaign for self-sufficiency in the defense industry and launched numerous military projects.

Last year in February, the Iranian Navy unveiled its first domestically-manufactured destroyer, Jamaran, in the waters of the Persian Gulf.

The 1,420-ton destroyer, equipped with modern radars and other electronic warfare capabilities, patrols the southern waters of the Persian Gulf.

In January, Iran successfully test-fired the mid-range, surface-to-air Hawk missile, and the Iranian Defense Ministry delivered new cruise missile systems to the Navy.

The systems, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, are capable of spotting and destroying different targets at sea.
