President of Georgia and Prime Minister of Turkey today opened a checkpoint in Sarpi on the Georgian-Turkish border. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili stated at the opening ceremony that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a "man of word" and that he kept all he promised.

"This is the construction of the checkpoint, and the opening of flights between Georgia and Turkey, this is support for Georgia in international organizations, this is the investment of Turkey in Georgia," Saakashvili said, noting that Erdogan is a very modern and powerful politician who has achieved progress in Turkey.

"I am proud of the fact that Erdogan is a friend of mine and a friend of Georgia," he said.

Erdogan said that he is happy to open the checkpoint that is very important for both countries. "It is important to open this checkpoint, which facilitates the passage through the border, as well as the fact that henceforth our citizens can pass the border without passports, only on the basis of identity card. This will further bring our peoples closer," he said.
