Ahmadinejad: Iran's nuclear plants safer than Japan's

05 April 2011 [10:18] - TODAY.AZ
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Monday that Iran's nuclear plants were safer than those in Japan and the incidents in Fukushima would not be repeated in Iran, DPA reported.

"The technology used in the nuclear plants in Fukushima is 50 years old, but the technology used in the Iranian plants is brand new," Ahmadinejad said at a press conference in Tehran.

Following the incidents in Fukushima, there has been concern in Iran because its only nuclear plant is located in the southern Gulf port of Bushehr, a quake-prone area.

"As far as I know, the incident was not due to the quake but the tsunami and we have had no tsunamis in the Persian Gulf and therefore there should be any reason to worry," Ahmadinejad said.
