7 "terrorists" killed in clash in south Turkey: report

01 April 2011 [16:07] - TODAY.AZ
Seven "terrorists" were killed in a clash with security forces in south Turkey on Friday, local media reported. The militants sneaked into Turkey from Syria and opened fire on security teams when the gendarmerie ordered them to surrender in the Hassa town of Hatay province, semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

Military operations were continuing in the region, the report quoted unnamed officials as saying, Xinhua reported.

Local NTV channel said the killed militants were members of the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK).

Listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, the PKK took up arms in 1984 in order to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey.

Some 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the PKK in the past over two decades.
