Turkey reaches miner bodies after eight months

19 January 2011 [15:45] - TODAY.AZ
Teams pulled out bodies of two workers in a coal mine in the northern province of Zonguldak eight months after a gas explosion occurred in the mine.

On May 17, 2010, a gas explosion occurred in Karadon mine in Zonguldak, and 30 workers had been killed, however, teams were able to pull out bodies of 28 workers. The bodies of Engin Duzcuk and Dursun Kartal had been under the debris since then.

Turkey Hard Coal Institution (TTK) had signed a contract with Chinese Sino Steel Industry & Trade Group (SSIT) on November 12, 2010 for clearing the debris, cleaning and repairing the mine as well as finding the bodies of the two workers.

19 Chinese workers from SSIT were able to reach the bodies on Tuesday --eight months after the collapse of the mine.

The 30 miners had been working in two separate areas at a depth of about 540 metres when the explosion ripped through the coal mine. The explosion in the coal mine also injured 11 miners.

Turkey's worst mining disaster was in 1992 when a blast killed 270 miners near Zonguldak.
