Opposition rally brutally dispersed in Yerevan - PHOTOS

31 May 2010 [12:55] - TODAY.AZ
On May 30, a group of young activists of the opposition Armenian National Congress tried to stage a protest rally on the Freedom Square in Yerevan.
The police dispersed the rally by force closing entrances to the opera house, preventing not only the young opposition, but also journalists and ordinary citizens from square gathering.

The Police officers, some of whom were in civilian clothes, behaved very aggressively. Not satisfied with closing the Liberty Square and detaining some of the young oppositionists, the police applied force to disperse the ANC representatives from the square.

Police violence was accompanied by blows and curses, and the whole process was led by regimental commander of patrol police Robert Melkonyan and the police chief of the Central Division Ashot Karapetyan. The police illegally took several ANS representatives to the Central Police Department. All the detainees were released several hours later.
