Germany may ease visa procedures for some Turks

31 March 2010 [11:33] - TODAY.AZ
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said her country may ease visa procedures for Turkish citizens and issue long-term visas especially for businesspeople, students and artists.
Speaking at a meeting of the Turkish-German economic forum in Istanbul on Tuesday on the second day of her visit to Turkey, Merkel said the two countries needed to remove obstacles against the improvement of economic relations.

"We need to renew our agreement to prevent double taxation, an issue which I have talked with Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan and we agreed to work together to solve problems so that the agreement could be signed next year the latest," Merkel said.

The German chancellor said security of Turkey's borders was an important issue within the framework of its European Union membership negotiations, adding that Turkey had exerted significant efforts to that end.

Merkel said Turkey and Germany also needed to make a deal on extradition of criminals.
