New Armenian broadcast legislation prohibits daytime programs containing sexual content or violence

09 February 2010 [14:57] - TODAY.AZ
Vice-President of Armenia's National Commission on Television and Radio (NCTR) Jirair Dadasyan and Ashot Bleyan (head of Mkhitar Sebastaci Education Complex) held a debate on the new parameters outlined by Article 24 of the RA Law about Television and Radio.

Dadasyan, in turn, said that NCTR expects to receive suggestions regarding the project which will help to accurately organize the work.

He also recalled that experts representing different sectors had participated in the two-month discussions over the development of the new parameters.

According to these new parameters, horror films and TV programs that have explicit sexual content or scenes of explicit violence, as well as programs that may have a negative effect on teenagers’ health, mental or physical development, will be aired only between midnight and 6 am in Armenia.

TV programs that have a special code number will be an exception.

“If the soap opera has scenes of violence, then it must also be broadcast at the time mentioned,” said Dadasyan.

All TV companies will have to follow the new parameters as soon as they are ready; for those who do not comply with the new legislation, after two warnings, they will be deprived of their broadcasting license.
