The barrier fence under construction in the Evros region on the Greek-Turkish land border is 100% effective in preventing the entry of illegal migrants, 150 additional border guards will be sent to the border in this area, bringing their number to 600, Azernews reports.
Gerapetritis, quoted by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, inspected the construction of the barrier.
"It is 100% effective in terms of protecting national and European borders," the minister said. For this reason, 150 more border guards will be added to the 450 border guards already recruited over the past two years to support the second line of defense."
The Greek authorities have been building a barrier fence on the border since 2020. This helped deter attempts to break through in the spring of 2020 by tens of thousands of illegal migrants from Turkiye. In August 2022, the Greek government announced its decision to extend the barrier fence along the entire length of the Evros River (approximately 200 km).
