Leaders of Turkmenistan, Turkey meet in Islamabad

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his working visit to Pakistan.

The heads of states were participating in the ECO summit in Islamabad. The sides exchanged views on prospects for cooperation, the Turkmen government said in a statement.

The two sides called for the further all-round strengthening of effective interaction. Trade and economy, energy sector, transport and communications, construction industry and a number of other industries are among the priorities of partnership. In this aspect, the high interest of Turkish businessmen in expanding mutually beneficial relations with Turkmenistan was highlighted, the statement said.

A significant role in the deepening and diversification of productive contacts is given to the intergovernmental commission, the Joint Business Council and business forums and industry exhibitions held on a regular basis. The sides also exchanged views on a number of topical issues of regional and global agenda.

The similarity or identity of the positions of Turkmenistan and the Republic of Turkey on the vital issues of our time, primarily related to ensuring global peace, security and sustainable development, is a reliable basis for the further promotion of constructive partnership on the world stage, according to the statement.

Turkish companies in Turkmenistan implement large-scale projects in sectors such as transport, fuel and energy, communication, agriculture, construction, trade, water resources management. Currently, Turkmenistan has registered about 600 companies with Turkish capital.

Turkey mostly exports electronic equipment, machinery, processed metals and furniture to the Central Asian nation, making up some 26 percent of imports of Turkmenistan.

In its turn, Turkey purchases electricity, polymers, propylene, oil and oil products, cotton yarn and textiles.

Turkey was the first country to recognize the independence of Turkmenistan on October 27, 1991.
