'New' underground period of 'Muslim Brotherhood'

13 September 2013 [13:08] - TODAY.AZ
After the ousting of the "Muslim Brotherhood" from Egypt's political life, the arrests of its leaders began. Mohammed Badie, supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, who has always had a great political weight, was detained during the events held against the organization.

On Wednesday, 19 more members of the "Muslim Brotherhood" were detained in several large cities in Egypt on charges of propaganda and for resisting the police. They will stand before the Court for Serious Crimes.

The last measure taken in this direction was today's decision to close around 2,200 mosques, which are the main places of Muslim Brotherhood's propaganda, as well as to ban the activity of about 55,000 imams. The decision was made by Abdel Fattah Sisi, who is considered the architect of the military coup.

The main reasons of the coup in Egypt are considered to be an economic crisis and the unstable situation in the country, but this is far from true. One of the main reasons of the military coup is a Morsi government policy aimed at supporting Palestine and rapprochement with Turkey, at least for the reason that the political elites of the two countries, which also poses the greatest military potential, are close to each other in terms of ideology.

It was expected that following the Muslim Brotherhood's statement about continuing the struggle against the military coup, tensions in the country will increase and possibly start civil strife. According to the party's statement, currently, there is no security and stability in Egypt, investments are not made in the country, and the economic situation is so that the forces which came to power through the military coup will have to relinquish the power soon.

Apart from all of this, the Muslim brotherhood called on its supporters to continue the struggle.

But if to pay attention to the history of Muslim Brotherhood, it can be realized that the actions of the military government against the organization is not new for them. The Muslim Brotherhood was subject to such pressure from the date of its establishment.

Even during Hosni Mubarak's tenure, the organization's activity was prohibited and it had to go underground for many years.

As it can be seen, the Muslim Brotherhood has a kind of "immunity" against political repressions. Therefore, the arrests of the organization's leaders will not lead to its weakening. As in spite of politicization of the Muslim Brotherhood, their activity is based on ideological grounds.

Against the background of tensions in Egypt, it is expected that this organization will again be prohibited by the new authorities. In the case of prohibition, the Muslim Brotherhood will likely go underground, which is not new for them and this will affect the country's future political life.
