Solana: Iran's presidential election result significant for western countries

The EU's former foreign policy chief Javier Solana expressed hope that the West and the US will support Iran's determination to improve relations with the world countries, during his meeting with the Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Mehr news agency reported.

He also said that, Iran's presidential election result is significant for western countries, adding that, Iranian people have the right to achieve their historical and cultural position in the world via interaction with the world.

Solana added that he is acquainted with Hassan Rouhani and his politics, the report said.

Rafsanjani in his turn said that, a new era has started in Iran's foreign policy based on mutual respect and trust, adding that Iran and the western countries should not let the last 8 year's policies to cast shadow on the ongoing activities.

Rafsanjani also criticized double-standard approaches taken by the US administration, adding that no negotiations can come to fruition with threats and sanctions.

It should be recalled that Solana previously said in an interview with Iranian Shargh newspaper that Rouhani is someone with whom one can come to an agreement.

Solana was the special guest of Rouhani`s swearing ceremony which was held on August 4.

On August 3, Rouhani met with the Leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who officially endorsed Hassan Rohani as the country's new president for a four-year term.

On 14 June 2013, Hassan Rouhani won the presidential elections in Iran, gathering over 50 percent of total votes.

Rouhani previously said that he will work towards the removal of western sanctions, adding that his government will adopt moderate policies and actions.
