Turkey's accession to get green light from EU ministers

25 June 2013 [13:40] - TODAY.AZ
European Affairs ministers are expected to agree on opening a new chapter in Turkey's EU accession talks at a meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday, after overcoming resistance from some member states due to its violent crackdown on protesters, dpa reported.

"I think there's a big big majority, overwhelming, that wants to open the (negotiation) chapter," Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said Tuesday.

Turkey, for its part, is now willing to accept a compromise under which the EU would agree to open a new accession chapter, but actual talks would depend on the bloc's next report on Ankara's democratic reform process later this year, according to sources close to the negotiations.
