UN Head sees political solution for Syria

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday a political solution to the Syrian conflict is still "possible" and that he is to meet with the international envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, to discuss "options" to end the conflict, dpa reported.

"Prospects for peace may seem grim, but a political solution is possible and the UN is pushing in that direction," Ban told a news conference.

Ban is to meet with Brahimi later Wednesday and with Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi next week in New York. He dismissed as "speculation and rumor" that Brahimi may plan to step down.

He said the international team of experts on chemical and biological weapons is ready to enter Syria as soon as Damascus gives its consent to begin the probe on alleged use of those weapons in the country.
