Georgia, U.S. define new areas of military coop

06 June 2012 [11:58] - TODAY.AZ
New areas of cooperation have been defined in the relations between the U.S. and Georgia in the defense sphere, Georgian Deputy Defense Minister Nodar Kharshiladze told journalists.

"The U.S. will provide assistance to Georgia to improve defense capability, which imply such areas as control of air space, development of helicopter flights capacity, development of engineering capabilities and training of Georgian units to conduct defensive operations," Kharshiladze said.

He stressed that specific activities are planned, and cooperation between the U.S. and Georgia in defense will be raised to a more efficient level.

Yesterday U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated about three new spheres of military cooperation in Batumi.

"The United States will provide training and support for Georgia's defense policy, so that you could better protect your shoreline and sky," she said. "We will improve multipurpose helicopters of Georgia, so that they could transport goods and people across the country easier. We also intend to help Georgia to ensure training of officers, that is necessary in today's changing environment," Clinton said.

These efforts will help Georgia to become a strong international partner, to improve its defense capabilities, Clinton believes.
