Ali Larijani re-elected as Iranian parliament speaker

Ali Larijani on Monday was elected acting speaker of the Iranian parliament, IRINN TV channel reported.

On the second day of the parliament session elections of acting speaker were held. The session was attended by 275 MP. Of them, 175 voted for Larijani, while 100 MPs voted for the second candidate - former speaker Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel.

Currently, elections of the presidium members are held in the Parliament. Two speaker deputies have already been appointed.

The speaker of Iran's parliament elected each year. Two thirds of the elected MPs' mandates should be approved so that the acting speaker can take up his position on a permanent basis.

Larijani served four years as a Speaker of the Parliament's eighth convocation.

Iran's newly elected parliament began its first session on Sunday.

The opening session of the Islamic Republic's ninth Majlis (parliament) was attended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, high ranking military leaders, the heads of various supervisory bodies and foreign ambassadors.

The 290 members of the 9th Islamic Consultative Assembly were elected in early March and in a runoff round on May 4.
