Azerbaijan proposes observer status for the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States in the UN GA

Azerbaijan, along with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey proposes some observer status for the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States in the UN General Assembly, the UN News Service informed.

A draft resolution submitted by four Ambassadors - Agshin Mehdiyev (Azerbaijan), Byrganym Aitimova (Kazakhstan) Talaibek Kydyrov (Kyrgyzstan) and Ertuğrul Apakan (Turkey) addressed to the Secretary-General included in the provisional agenda of forthcoming autumn session of the UN GA.

“In accordance with rule of procedure of the General Assembly, we have the honor to request the inclusion in the provisional agenda of the 66th session of the General Assembly of an item entitled “Observer status for the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States in the General Assembly”, says the letter.

“This topic was reflected in the Assembly’s preliminary agenda on the 165th place”, a UN GA source said.

“The Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States was created in 2009 as an international intergovernmental organization with the overarching aim of promoting comprehensive cooperation among its four founding member States -(Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey”, remind the ambassadors.

“According to the first two statutory documents of the Cooperation Council, the Nakhchivan Agreement of 3 October 2009 and the Istanbul Declaration of 16 September 2010, States members of the Cooperation Council embrace the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, along with other universally recognized principles of international law. Established norms related to the maintenance of peace and security and the development of good-neighborly relations lay the foundation for cooperation to be developed under the Cooperation Council”, they added.

According to them, as an intergovernmental organization dedicated to strengthening peace and stability, enhancing dialogue, promoting cooperation and disclosing the potential for common development among its member States, the Cooperation Council fully adheres to the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the UN.

“By promoting deeper relations and solidarity among Turkic-speaking countries, it serves as a new regional instrument for enriching international cooperation in the Central Asian and Caucasian regions”.

According to the draft resolution, the General Assembly will announce its wishing to promote cooperation between the UN and Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States.

“If the resolution gets accepted, then the organization should decide to invite the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer and requests the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the present resolution”, the source explained.

The Assembly’s meeting will begin on September 13 in New York.
