Azerbaijani MP: Parliamentary elections indicate democratic path

25 January 2011 [12:50] - TODAY.AZ
The recent parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are a clear sign of the fact that the country has chosen the path to democracy and is committed to democratic values, member of the Azerbaijani Delegation to PACE Rafael Huseynov said this week during discussions of a report on the elections prepared by Polish MP Tadeush Ivinsky.

Huseynov expressed his gratitude to all of his counterparts from the CoE who participated in the elections as observers and have helped the Azerbaijani people on their path to democracy.

"Azerbaijan marks the 10th anniversary of the country's membership in the CoE. The country will also mark the twentieth anniversary of its independence. Thus, Azerbaijan has passed half of its independence in the CoE family. The CoE has played a significant role in Azerbaijan's progress in democratic reforms, legal state-building and respecting human rights," Huseynov said.

The Azerbaijani MP stressed that Azerbaijan has held four parliamentary elections since its independence.

"Azerbaijan has held four parliamentary elections since it independence. As a person participating in all of these elections, I can say that it is impossible not to see an increase in Azerbaijani citizens' public activity, the country's obstinacy in bringing elections to conformity with international standards. I and some members of our delegation have observed the parliamentary and presidential elections in several countries as CoE representatives. Azerbaijan's successes have been considered in this large context, and this is noticeable in comparison with certain countries," Huseynov said.

The MP added that Azerbaijan has chosen the path to democracy.
