Azerbaijan supports the existence of two states - Israel and Palestine, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said in an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper Alrai.

"Azerbaijan has diplomatic relations with Israel, the Israeli embassy and the Jewish communities operate in the country, as well as we have close economic relations," he said. "Regarding the Palestinian problem, Azerbaijan supports Palestine and we have a clear position on this issue."

He said Azerbaijan has not yet opened an embassy in Tel Aviv, as Baku is in favor of the existence of two states - Israel and Palestine.

"I believe in the importance of Palestine's full membership in the UN and receive of a mandate as other countries," Mammadyarov said.

Regarding the Azerbaijan- Israel cooperation in the defense sector, Mammadyarov noted that these relationships were established after the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia. "We turned to many nations to reinforce our army and Israel responded to it first," he added.

Mammadyarov expressed confidence that the Azerbaijani-Israeli relations will not negatively affect the relations with Tehran.

"We are neighbors and multiple Azerbaijani communities, with whom we share the same language, live in Iran. We have common traditions and customs, and we believe in good neighbor policies" Mammadyarov said.
