UNODC: Azerbaijan is important in terms of fighting drug trafficking originating in Afghanistan

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) sees Azerbaijan  as an important country in the fight against trafficking in drugs originating in Afghanistan. Azerbaijan is an important country in combating trafficking in drugs originating in Afghanistan and UNODC's active partner in the South Caucasus, UNODC Head Yuri Fedotov said.

UNODC is ready to support Azerbaijan in the further development of this cooperation, Fedotov said at a meeting with Azerbaijani Ambassador to Austria Fuad Ismayilov, the embassy told Trend.

Azerbaijan attaches great importance to cooperation with the UNODC in combating drug trafficking and organized crime at the international level, Ismayilov said.

Fedotov expressed a willingness to support Azerbaijan's proposals and initiatives in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime. Expressing regret at the drug problem existing in the world, Fedotov noted that he expects support from Azerbaijan in solving this problem.

The UNODC opened an office in Azerbaijan in 2007and is actively cooperating with the country. In 1992, Azerbaijan joined the UN International Convention on the fight against drugs.
