"Baku summit - an important step to ensure security in Caspian Sea" - PHOTOS - UPDATE

The Presidents of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran gave a press conference following the signing of documents of the third Caspian summit here Thursday. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said in his media statement the summit had been held constructively and the documents determined the framework of cooperation. President Ilham Aliyev underlined the documents are the important step to agree some matters.

President Ilham Aliyev pointed out respective bodies received instructions to prepare a mechanism of five-year surgeon fishing ban within three months.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad said the Caspian summit in Baku laid a foundation of great friendship and cooperation.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev pointed out there is a progress in determining the Caspian legal status. He also highlighted the importance of the documents signed.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev noted the summit produced concrete results, which are satisfactory. Medvedev said a good step was taken to define the Caspian legal status.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedow noted the Caspian is the sea of peace and cooperation. The Heads of State thanked Azerbaijani leader Aliyev for very well organization of the summit. President Ilham Aliyev, for his part, expressed gratitude to Heads of Caspian nations for their contribution to achievement of the results.

An Agreement on Security Cooperation in the Caspian Sea was signed at the third summit of heads of the Caspian littoral states - Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, AzerTAc state news agency reported. The presidents of the Caspian littoral countries also signed a joint statement.

A summit of the Heads of Caspian littoral states started in Baku on November 18. The event is attended by Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Dmitry Medvedev of Russia, Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad of Iran and Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedow of Turkmenistan.

Opening the summit President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said the meeting would be an important step to ensure security in the Caspian region. President Ilham Aliyev pointed out much work has been done so far to determine the Caspian legal status. He expressed hope that practical results will be achieved in the future in this direction.

The Azerbaijani leader noted the fact that the legal status of the Caspian remains unsettled had not have any impact on friendly relations among the countries, adding steps Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan took towards sectoral division of the Caspian will be a good basis in the future.

President Aliyev said Azerbaijan is an active participant of the East-West and North-South corridor projects. According to him, reconstruction of the railway transport is a priority. He noted construction of the new Baku trade seaport would serve interests of all Caspian nations.

The 3rd summit of the leaders of the Caspian littoral states has started at the Genclik residence of the Azerbaijani president on Thursday.

According to APA, President Ilham Aliyev welcomed the presidents of the Caspian littoral states – Dmitry Medvedev of Russia, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, Kurbankuli Berdimuhammedov of Turkmenistan and Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan. Following the welcoming ceremony, the heads of states had photograph taken against the background of the national flags of their countries.

Then the summit took off. In his welcoming speech, President Ilham Aliyev emphasized the importance of reaching consensus in determination of the Caspian legal status. He said Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia have reached an agreement on division of the Caspian Sea. “Today we need to strengthen economic cooperation between the five littoral states to make the Caspian as a sea of peace”.

First summit of the Caspian states’ leaders took place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on April 23-24, 2002, second in Tehran, Iran on October 16, 2007.

The heads of states will discuss the legal status of the Caspian Sea at the summit. Two documents – joint statement and Caspian security agreement - were submitted to the presidents for signing.
