25 October 2010 [11:43] - TODAY.AZ
Interview with British Lord, John Laird.
Being one of the participants of the South Caucasus situation conference in Baku, what could you say about Azerbaijan's regional role?

Frankly speaking i was very satisfied with the conference, it was very positive. I think Azerbaijan plays a very positive role in the region, and I would also like to see Azerbaijan's influence not only in the region, but also outside of it, in the United Kingdom as well. I believe, people in my country would like to know more about Azerbaijani republic, its culture, people. UK has things to learn from Azerbaijan.

And what can you say about Azerbaijan's main problem - the ongoing occupation of its native lands?

Yes, in real, this is the problem of the whole region. I am sure that the Nagorno Karabakh problem that can be solved at a certain stage, and it will be solved, since its a solvable problem. On the other hand, it must be prevented that this problem does not slow down people's development, culture and thinking developments as well.

There are people, who believe, that this conflict is impossible to solve with the help of higher powers...

I think that if Azerbaijan continues to improve its stand on the world arena, then the higher powers might take its side. This cannot be excluded. One of the main problems that Azerbaijan encounters today, is Armenian lobby. I think its time for Azerbaijanis to start doing something as well. You know, the more I talked to the people here, the more I wanted to know, and understand. And the more active these people will be, the better it will be to change views on this problem, say in Russia.

Great Britain was one of the major players in the South Caucasus region, in the beginning of the last century. The British even found for controlling Azerbaijan. What are british interests today, in Azerbaijan?

As far as I know, Britain is one of the biggest investors in Azerbaijan, and I am sure this will continue in the future. I live in London city, and this is where many azerbaijanis live, they're well mannered, educated, know how to express their thoughts, and it is important that when they return back, they will bring all this knowledge with them. I am very satisfied with people in Azerbaijan, and I hope the contacts between our peoples in the future will only strengthen.
