Azerbaijani CEC, CoE Venice Commission discuss cooperation

The Azerbaijani Central Election Commission and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe discussed issues of cooperation.
Sept.24, a delegation headed by Thomas Markert, secretary of the Council of Europe's Venice Commission, met with Chairman of the Central Election Commission Mazahir Panahov, the CEC said.

According to Panahov, the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission attaches special importance to cooperation with international organizations, including the Council of Europe's Venice Commission. Fruitful cooperation of the CEC with the Venice Commission began in 2003, joint activities made an important contribution to the development of democracy in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan uses its achievements in the economic sphere for the development of democracy in the country, Markert said. He also expressed satisfaction with the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission's close cooperation with the Venice Commission.

The CEC Chairman also raised the issue on clarification of voter lists. According to him, this process started in January and still is underway. Panahov informed the guests about the enlightenment program implemented by the CEC, noted the importance of the role of activities undertaken jointly with the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.

According to Panahov, in October meetings will be organized for preparation of trainings for the lower election commissions. He informed the guests about the current election situation in the country and shared the plans, related with the CEC's future activities. The Azerbaijani parliament elections are scheduled for Nov. 7.
