The suspension of dumping waste water into the Baku Bay will address the problem of its pollution, Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Huseyngulu Bagirov told journalists today.
"Water in the Baku Bay will be cleared within six months, and if sewage water is not directed toward it, there will be no trace of a bad smell," Bagirov said.
He said it will be possible to completely clean the Baku Bay in accordance with the rest of the Caspian Sea within two years.
There is no need to purify the bottom of the Baku Bay, since large amounts of dirt from the bottom of the sea could rise up and the situation may worsen, he added.
Bagirov said that natural organic compounds in the sea will neutralize the accumulated dirt within 5-10 years. The cleaning of the Baku Bay is among measures to improve the environment undertaken in Azerbaijan in 2006-2010.
