"Absence of U.S. ambassador has no negative impact on American-Azerbaijan ties "

Absence of a U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan has no negative impact on relations between the two countries, Head of Azerbaijani Presidential Administration's Socio-political Department Ali Hasanov told journalists today.

"Staff of the American diplomatic mission in the country performs ambassador's functions," he added.

"But, according to the international practice, a state cannot leave the post of an ambassador vacant more than a year. Therefore, we hope that the U.S. will appoint an ambassador to Azerbaijan in this interim period," Hasanov said.

The post of U.S. ambassador in Baku has been vacant since previous ambassador Anne Derse left the country after termination of her diplomatic mission in July 2009.
