CEC: Azerbaijan cannot further simplify procedures for registration of candidates

23 August 2010 [14:17] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan's Central Election Commission (CEC) Chairman Mazahir Panahov says it is impossible to further simplify procedures for registration of candidates under the current legislation.
"Azerbaijan has created very simple conditions of registration for elections and it is impossible to simplify them even more. Candidates are required to collect only 450 signatures, representing about 1 percent of the district," Panahov said.

It is necessary to further simplify the procedure of registration of candidates in Azerbaijan, OSCE Baku Office Head Ali Bilge Cankorel said in his speech at the opening of training courses  for the chairmen of district election commissions (DEC).

In his view, it is better to reduce the number of required documents.

The CEC, to the possible extent, tries to address any misunderstandings that arise during the registration process in favor of candidates under the legislation.

Azerbaijan will hold parliamentary elections on Nov. 7. Previous elections were held in Nov. 2005. The elections are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies.
