Participants of 7th Baku International Conference of Ombudspersons met Azerbaijani vice-speaker

Azerbaijan`s Parliament vice-speaker Ziyafat Asgarov has met participants of the 7th Baku International conference of ombudspersons themed “Human rights and environment: legal and ethical aspects of climate change”.
Asgarov highlighted the activities of the parliament and laws adopted by the legislative body on protection of human rights and environment. He said the Parliament had adopted over ten laws and ratified a number of several international conventions aimed at strengthening the environmental protection. He said protecting environment was among key priorities of the Azeri government, saying the 2010 was announced a Year of Environment in Azerbaijan.

Asgarov pointed out a large number of regional and international organizations, including the United Nations praised the Azerbaijani government`s efforts towards solving environmental problems in the country. He stressed the importance of combining efforts by all countries to strengthen the protection of environment and cope with natural disasters all over the world.

The Azeri parliament`s vice-speaker highlighted the consequences of Armenia`s military aggression against Azerbaijan, saying it caused “great damage” to the country`s environment.

“Forests were burnt and rivers were polluted in Azerbaijan`s lands occupied by Armenians,” said Asgarov, adding: “It is a great damage not only to nature but to the whole humanity and also a gross violation of human rights.”

He expressed hope ombudspersons' efforts towards ensuring the protection of environment would yield results. Azeri ombudswoman Elmira Suleymanova highlighted the importance of topics on the agenda of the Baku conference.

Ombudsperson of Russia`s Saratov region Nina Lukashova praised the Azeri government`s efforts to strengthen the protection of human rights and freedom. Representative of UNESCO Moscow office Alla Ampar hailed the Azerbaijani parliament`s human rights-related programs.
