Statement issued on "elections" in Nagorno-Karabakh separatist regime

The Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan has issued a statement over conduct of “parliamentary elections” by Armenian separatist regime in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“As a result of ethnic cleansing committed by Armenia, over a million Azerbaijanis were driven from the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and surrounding regions as well as historical lands in Armenia,” the statement said.

The CEC stated in a statement the illegal regime in Nagorno-Karabakh is going to hold “parliamentary elections” on May 23.

“This election game to take place in the occupied lands of Azerbaijan totally contradicts international legal norms, Constitution of the Azerbaijan Republic and laws, and is nothing but an attempt of Armenia`s political forces to impede peace talks and once more mislead the international community and countries, which already realize the causes and real nature of occupation”

The Commission welcomed statements not recognizing illegal elections made by international organizations including the Council of Europe, OSCE and its Minsk group as well as some countries. The CEC warned so-called “observers” against going to Nagorno-Karabakh for the “elections” since by doing so they violate international legal norms and principles as well as laws of Azerbaijan.

“The Central Election Commission states elections and referendums in the occupied lands may be conducted on the basis of constitution and laws of Azerbaijan Republic only after deoccupation of those lands, restoration of Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity, people`s returning to their homes”

The Central Election Commission announced its does not recognize and consider as illegal such “elections” directed against sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
