"Russia and Azerbaijan gradually play important role in the Middle East"

Russia and Azerbaijan gradually play increasingly important role in not only the South Caucasus but also Middle East, director of the Institute of Strategic Studies of Russia Leonid Reshetnikov said at the “roundtable” meeting.

The event organized by Center for Strategic Studies ( CSS) under President of Azerbaijan and the Institute of Strategic Studies of Russia brought together well-known political experts from both countries.

On processes taking place in the region, Mr. Reshetnikov said the situation in the Middle East may bring to the global conflict. He said the international community undertakes measures to prevent these conflicts.

On activity of the Institute of Strategic Studies of Russia, Reshetnikov said after reorganization of the Institute, the first roundtable meeting under auspices of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was dedicated to Russia-Azerbaijan relations.

Speaking on close relations with CSS, Reshetnikov said agreement on cooperation between the two structures and joint publications of the collections of scientific papers are expected to be realized in near future.

Chief of CSS Elkhan Nuriyev, Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vladimir Dorokhin said the close relations between the two countries would promote the further effective development of ties. The world`s power centers, including Russia wholly supports pragmatic and good-temepered policy of Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev.

The employees of the Institute of Strategic Studies of Russia, Azerbaijani political analysts delivered reports on a regional geopolitics and problems of security. The roundtable meeting focused on geopolitical processes in the Southern Caucasus, Russian-Iranian relations, Iran's nuclear program and role of both countries in a regional security in the Middle East.
